For two weeks the market has somewhat been sounding the alarms that market breadth was weak and a forceful rally was not in the cards. Long term the market was in good shape, and I had no reason to believe stocks wouldn’t continue up into 2019, but in the near-to-intermediate term, there just wasn’t the support for an energetic move.

Europe, Africa and the Middle East currently lean to the downside. Greece and Israel are up; Poland, Germany, Russia, the Netherlands, Italy and Portugal are down. Futures in the States point towards a moderate gap down open for the cash market.

The Asian/Pacific markets closed mostly down. Japan, China, Hong Kong, South Korea, Indonesia and Singapore posted noticeable losses. Europe, Africa and the Middle East currently lean to the upside. The UK, Germany, France, South Africa, Finland, Hungary, Portugal, Israel and Sweden are up; Poland, Turkey, Greece and Italy are down. Futures in the States point towards a relatively big gap up open for the cash market.

The Asian/Pacific markets closed with a lean to the downside. South Korea, India and Indonesia did well, but China, Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Thailand were very weak. Europe, Africa and the Middle East are currently mostly down. The UK, Denmark, France, Germany, Turkey, Russia, South Africa, Finland, Norway, Spain, the Netherlands and Portugal are all down 1% or more. Futures in the States point towards a relatively big gap down open for the cash market.

The Asian/Pacific markets closed mixed. Japan, South Korea, India, Taiwan and Australia moved up; Hong Kong, Indonesia, Thailand and the Philippines moved down. Europe, Africa and the Middle East lean a little to the upside but are mostly unchanged. Turkey, Russia, Greece and Hungary are up; South Africa is down. Futures in the States point towards a moderate gap up open for the cash market.

Good morning. Happy Monday. Hope you had a good weekend.

The Asian/Pacific markets suffered relatively big losses. Japan, Hong Kong, South Korea, Taiwan, Indonesia and the Philippines were all very weak. Europe, Africa and the Middle East are currently mostly down. Turkey is down more than 4%; the UAE, Greece, Hungary, Portugal, Austria and Saudi Arabia are also weak. South Africa is doing well. Futures in the States were down a bunch overnight but are now pointing to a flat open for the cash market.
